BMS(Hons)
Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours

Gain the strategic insights and leadership qualities to help companies achieve global success with New Zealand’s first truly international business degree.

International Case Comp

Our Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours is one of New Zealand's leading four-year business degrees, with its emphasis on global strategic thinking, leadership, innovation and practical industry experience.

This exceptional degree is aimed at top students who wish to become dynamic, future-focused business leaders, with the ability to tackle complex challenges facing major organisations and help contribute to creating a better world.

With the BMS(Hons), you'll get two rounds of practical work experience built into the programme. This gives you twice as many opportunities to test your skills in the real world by delivering projects for real organisations; based either in New Zealand or overseas if you wish.

In first year you’ll get a grounding in business fundamentals, from accounting, economics and finance through to digital business, marketing, strategy and supply chain management. This allows you to discover which career pathways you’re most passionate about.

Then in second year you'll specialise in up to two major subjects, take papers at a more advanced level, and start to see the bigger picture from a general management perspective.

Global exposure at postgraduate level

The BMS(Hons) includes a series of professional management papers at postgraduate level in years 3 and 4, which are designed to be challenging and inspiring. You’ll delve deeply into real-world issues faced by business leaders, such as managing risk and uncertainty.

Another exciting highlight of this degree is the opportunity to take part in the BMS(Hons) Study Tour and visit top organisations involved in international business. This unique travel experience will bring to life your understanding of global business practice and the complexities of working in international markets.

Through hands-on learning and real-life case studies, the BMS(Hons) will equip you to identify new commercial opportunities, develop effective business growth strategies in the global context, and build a culture of innovation within firms. You'll also learn about the barriers faced by smaller companies, and how to make them more profitable and efficient.

Graduate work-ready

As you move through your degree you’ll be studying with the same cohort of students, helping to build professional networks and lifelong bonds.

Our graduates are highly regarded by employers and go on to become senior leaders at organisations around the world. You’ll graduate work-ready, with a well-rounded set of analytical, creative, leadership, problem-solving and communication skills to maximise your career opportunities.

Practical industry experience

Unlike most degrees, the BMS(Hons) includes two work-integrated learning papers, such as undertaking an internship with a relevant company or carrying out an applied business research project.

You’ll work on real-world case studies throughout your degree, drawing on your lecturers’ consultancy experience and strong business networks. We also invite guest lecturers from industry into the classroom to share their insights.

Professional Accounting pathway

If you'd like to become a certified Professional Accountant (by joining either CA ANZ, CPA Australia, CIMA or ACCA), you can use this degree to fast-track your journey and gain an internationally recognised qualification, by taking an approved suite of accounting and business papers.

During lectures, students will discuss case studies of New Zealand and overseas businesses, begin to apply key business theories and concepts to solve real problems, and work in teams to write reports and give presentations.

    • In the paper ACCTN101 Accounting for Management, you'll research a company listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange and use financial statements and other information - such as news articles and the company's track record on sustainability - to make a decision about whether you'd be willing to invest in or lend money to this company.
    • In the paper FINAN101 Introduction to Finance, you'll learn about the basic concepts of risk and return in relation to corporate finance and personal finance. For example, if you had $100, would you put it in a bank savings account, invest it in shares or Kiwisaver, or spend it on goods? You'll gain the skills to know which option provides you with the best return in the long run. For the first assignment, you'll examine case studies of well-known companies that have failed and discuss how to reduce agency conflicts between managers and shareholders. For the second assignment, you'll be asked to calculate the expected risk and return on two possible investment decisions, by using information sources such as the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges.
    • In fourth year, BMS(Hons) students will act as management consultants and apply the business theories they’ve learnt in class to develop a growth strategy for a real New Zealand company, as part of the Waikato Management School Case Competition. The top four teams will compete for a cash prize by pitching their ideas to a judging panel of industry experts in front of a public audience.

Prepare yourself for a global business career and broaden your horizons by going on an overseas student exchange to one of our partner universities in Europe, Asia, North America or Mexico. You can study overseas for 1-2 semesters, pay your usual Waikato tuition fees, and then credit the points back to your BMS(Hons) degree.

An overseas exchange will enhance your personal development, enable you to explore new places and cultures, and make your CV stand out to employers.

We strongly encourage our students to apply for the Waikato Management School International Exchange Scholarship, offered twice a year and worth up to $2,500.

You can also apply for the Discover SWUFE International Summer Camp Scholarship, which provides a fully-funded trip to China for two weeks of business lectures and cultural activities, hosted by the South-Western University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE).

If you’re planning to travel and work in an Asian or Latin American country, you can apply for a Prime Minister's Scholarship.
